Cancun 2014

Chris and I were lucky enough to go to Cancun, Mexico for our 10th anniversary. We left early Friday morning, June 6 and arrived in Cancun around 10:30 pm.
We got checked in and went straight to bed. Here is our room:

We knew it was going to be hot and humid, going to Cancun in June, but boy were we surprised at how hot and humid it was! I brought our SLR camera so i could take some fun pictures, but everytime we took it outside, the lens would instantly fog up. Hence, this picture:

We took the shuttle to "Plaza Las Americas" to a mall that is huge and has a lot of American stores. I wish you could see the pure craziness in this picture. We went to the food court to have some lunch. The food court was gigantic and there were people everywhere! It was quite overwhelming, but so fascinating!


Basically each day we started out by going to the beach or pool,then doing something fun, and then coming back for more swimming!

Sunday, we rode the Ultramar boat over to Isle de Mujeres.

We rented a golf cart to drive around the island. We saw a lot of cool things along our way. There was a turtle hatchery:





Cancun has a lot of iguanas EVERYWHERE! Some of them were so big!











After walking around a bunch of shops we found this little shack to eat at. It was our favorite meal of the trip! I was nervous about eating in Mexico but we luckily never got sick:)


Monday was our tour to Tulum, (a Mayan ruins city) and Xel-Ha.







The sun was intense this day, with no clouds. Don't laugh at me in a hat! I know I look silly, but I was glad to have it:)



At Xel-Ha (prounounced Shell-Ha) It is a "water park" type place. It is an inlet that the ocean feeds and they've made a park out of it. You can swim with dolphins, float down a river, cliff jump, zip line, rope climb, snorkel, go in cenotes (underground caves) and all you can eat/drink. We were there for over 5 hours and could have stayed a lot longer! It was beautiful and a lot of fun. The food was terrible, but edible enough to keep us full, though.











Tuesday we stayed at our resort the whole day. We slept in, ate, swam, layed out, and the best part-got a 50 minute full body massage. Neither of us have had a massage before so it was a new experience. Chris wasn’t sure about getting one, but was glad afterwards! First, they have you wear your swim suit and get in a warm Jacuzzi, then move to a warmer Jacuzzi, then move to the sauna. I had never been in a sauna before. It was so hard for me to breathe, but yet it felt so good. Right after you do the sauna for at least 3 minutes, they tell you to jump in the freezing cold Jacuzzi! I didn’t want to, but they told us it was very refreshing, so we did! It really was refreshing! After that, we put our robes on and got an amazing massage! I don’t have any pictures, but it was a great relaxing day!

At the resort, you can kayak and paddle board. Here is Chris paddle boarding. I'm not sure why it looks so dark and cloudy.


Wednesday we went to "Mercado 28", a flea market. It was super hot, which explains how awesome I look in these pics:) But it was so fun shopping around. There were hundreds of shops and all the people are out trying to get you to shop at their place. We were there around 3 hours and still didn't see the whole place.





And I can't forget the cute hippo the maid left for us:)


Thursday we did some more shopping, ate at Applebees, and swam a bunch more before we had to leave. Friday morning at 10:40 we left our hotel. We didn't get back to my parents house until 12:15 am. It was a long day, but went surprisingly fast. It was such a fun trip and I'm so glad we got to go on a trip with JUST us two! My family deserves a medal for taking on my kids for 8 whole days. They were spoiled rotten and Grandma really wore them out everyday. Thank you so much!
Some things we thought were funny in Mexico:
*The driving was insane. There aren't really lanes market with painted lines on most roads. So cars just dart in and out of "lanes." Luckily we didn't have to drive. We used the free shuttle that the resort provided or we probably wouldn't have come back a live!

*We were relieved to come back to the USA where we didn't have to convert pesos to dollars. It made my brain tired. 1 USD=12 pesos so things would say $98.00 and we would have to divide it by 12 to know how much to pay.

*There isn't really a "nice" part of Cancun, and a bad part. There is nice buildings mixed in with old run down buildings.

*Most people speak spanish and broken english, thanks goodness:)
